13 Day Countdown of At-Home Halloween Fun!

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! And even though getting all dressed up is both equally fun and anxiety inducing for me, the real reason I rarely do it is because I usually have nowhere to go! And now with a baby just under a year old, my guess is I’ll have even less activities to participate in this holiday. So, if you’re a homebody at heart (or just want to make October feel cozier), you can turn part of the month into a celebration with small, themed activities for a fun Halloween at home! This will give you even more reason to celebrate spooky season in all its glory.

This Halloween I’ve come up with a fun countdown of holiday themed activities that will get you enjoying all things spooky. So, whether you decide on an at-home Halloween or taking the opportunity to hit the streets for a night of trick-or-treating, there will now officially be something for everyone to enjoy. Here’s your 13-day countdown of at-home Halloween fun! Part cozy, part spooky, and 100% memory-making!

Day 1 – Haunted Movie Night

When it comes to the silver screen, I would definitely consider myself a movie buff. But even though I’m not a horror movie fan, it doesn’t mean I can’t still enjoy a fun movie night with my family during our home Halloween festivities. This is the season to get into your coziest of cozy PJs or onesie, grab a blanket and pop some popcorn and relax. I’ve suggested a few movies below, but again, I don’t watch super scary movies so, if you know the perfect horror flick to watch, then please let us know at the bottom of this post!

Pick your scare level:

  • Family-friendly: Hocus Pocus, Casper, Hotel Transylvania
  • Classic: Beetlejuice, The Addams Family, Ghostbusters, Death Becomes Her
  • Spooky thrills: Practical Magic, Sleepy Hollow, The Sixth Sense
  • Comedy: Young Frankenstein, Zombieland, Scary Movie
  • Eerie Flicks: Sinners, 28 Days Later, Ex Machina
  • Creepy TV: American Horror Story, Ratchet, Lovecraft Country, Wednesday

Add themed snacks like popcorn with candy corn mixed in or “witch’s brew” punch.

Day 2 – Pumpkin Decorating

There are so many ways to decorate a pumpkin. Going the traditional route by carving right into it and getting your hands dirty or even skipping the mess of carving all together if you want and drawing something on the outside skin or embellishing with decorations are just a few options. Some other ideas would be to paint, decoupage, or wrap pumpkins in black lace for a chic gothic touch. This is your personal home Halloween so just do whatever it is that YOU want! And once you have your pumpkins all dolled up, they become a perfect way to decorate your home by displaying them on your porch or mantle for instant seasonal charm.

Day 3 – Halloween Bake Day

This makes for such a fun day, especially if you have littles or a sweet tooth. There are a variety of pumpkin flavored treats you can make like pumpkin bread. But foods like candy apples, or spooky-shaped sugar cookies are also both fun and easy to make. And if you’re feeling so inclined you can make and package extras for neighbors, co-workers, family or friends. I personally cooked up these super cute spider cookies for work and my clients loved them!

Spider cookies

Peanut butter cookies are a great base for this cute little cookie. Melt a little shortening with chocolate in a microwave safe bowl and put it into a pastry bag to easily use for glueing a peanut butter cup to the center of the cookie, adding the edible eyes, and drawing on the spider legs. Enjoy!

Day 4 – Seasonal Self-Care Ritual

Celebrating Halloween at home isn’t all about the tricks. It’s about the treats too! And what better way to settle into spooky season than with a little witchy rest and restoration. So, tonight, I want you to take some time to treat yourself. Conjure up a Halloween ritual that feels extra luxe by lighting some fun ghost candles, dropping a creepy bath bomb into a steaming tub, and sooth your face with the popular zombie facial or a cheeky fun face mask while you listen to a favorite podcast or dive into a moody fall read. Let this be a reset and a way to recharge your spirit so you can fully enjoy the cozy, spooky season. If you’re up to it you could also journal after your soak, sip tea with your book, or simply quietly lounge in candlelight, all while making tonight about caring for your most important coven member: you.

Ghosted! by Roz Hernandez is your best bet when spooky meets hilarious. Hosted by comedian (and semi-retired drag performer) Roz Hernandez, this paranormal comedy podcast invites celebrities, psychics, and everyday ghost hunters to share their eerie stories mixed with laughs, curiosity, and heart.

Girl That’s Scary

This podcast is hosted by two friends navigating all things horror and sci-fi. Girl, That’s Scary is an unapologetically fun podcast where co-hosts Jazzmin and Kat chop it up about everything from poltergeists and zombie apocalypses to cult films and creature features.

Ghouls Night In

Hosted by the delightfully spooky duo Penny Snark and Midge Munster, Ghouls Night In is that cozy, late-night chat show your witchy soul needs. Whether they’re dissecting cryptid mysteries (hello, talking mongoose in the walls), untangling bizarre historical oddities, or simply fangirling over dark art, these two bring warmth, humor, and genuine curiosity to every episode.

Books

Witchcraft for Wayward Girls

by Grady Hendrix

A new release in 2025, this horror novel follows pregnant teens in a 1970s Florida home who stumble upon a witchcraft guide, launching a harrowing (and potent) journey of power, ritual, and survival. Think Rosemary’s Baby meets social horror, with the signature emotional depth and dark humor Hendrix is known for.

The Macabre

by Kosoko Jackson

Just released in September 2025, this fantasy-horror debut follows an artist whose great-grandfather’s cursed paintings hold unseen, terrifying magic. A richly spooky tale of art, legacy, and supernatural mystery.

Abercrombie

The Halloween Tree

By Ray Bradbury

An all-time classic, this imaginative fantasy novel takes a mystical journey through Halloween traditions across cultures and history. Perfect for both adult readers and nostalgic fans, its lyrical style and symbolic storytelling continue to enchant readers of all ages.

Day 5 – Candlelight Story Night

I love history, so traditions like this really resonate with me because tonight should be all about leaning into the oldest Halloween tradition of all! It’ll be a fun evening of gathering together to share tales that send a little shiver down your spine. Telling stories around candlelight just helps them come alive in the shadows. You can either grab a classic ghost story and read from a book or tell your own spooky encounter with a flashlight beaming from under your chin. Honestly, I think it’s fun to sometimes even make up your own outrageous story on the spot. So, pile on the blankets and let the room glow with candlelight as you swap stories and pass around some snacks. Whether they’re funny, eerie, or bone-chilling what’s important is coming together!

Day 6 – Creepy Craft Session

There are some things about Halloween that feel like a given… candy… costumes… all things spooky. But rolling up your sleeves and making something delightfully eerie, and with your own two hands, can add an entirely new layer to the festivities. Tonight is all about unleashing your inner mad scientist or crafty witch. From DIY potion bottles and spell jars to bat garlands, haunted wreaths, funky faux taxidermy or even candle holders that drip “blood,” a creepy craft night is the perfect way to set the mood for Halloween. Just summon your fellow ghoulfriends, gather your supplies and a cocktail and let the good time roll!

DIY Faux Taxidermy

This is such a fun way to add a little personal creepy decor to your home! All you need is to spray a Wood Plaque and plastic bat (or whichever creepy crawly you choose) with black spray paint and then add a layer of gold metallic over the black paint job on the bat. (Applying the gold over the black adds dimension) Then adhere the two together by using a hot glue gun

Day 7 – Haunted Cocktail / Mocktail Night

If you ask me, it just wouldn’t be a Halloween countdown without at least one night of boozy fun. Every witch needs her brew! So, make tonight the night to mix up a new spooky cocktail (or mocktail) in your favorite cauldron (aka your favorite glass). Whether you’re a cocktail lover or prefer a booze-free concoction, this is all about playful presentations: think “blood” mocktails with cranberry juice and smoky dry-ice, or black-as-midnight cocktails (like the Morticia Martini below) with black glitter or blackberry puree. Whichever you choose, gather your ingredients, dim the lights, and sip your creation while the ghosts and ghouls come out to play.

Morticia Martini

In honor of one of the queens of dark, here’s a sexy and citrusy black glitter martini to wow or spook your besties!

Day 8 – Halloween Game Night

Sure, Halloween at home is about costumes and candy… but it’s also the perfect excuse for a spooky spin on game night. Whether you’re playing with family, friends, or just yourself, a few creepy twists make even the simplest games feel festive. Like Halloween Charades or Pictionary, Ghost in the Graveyard game of outdoor tag, Truth or Scare or Halloween Bowling where you roll a small pumpkin into empty water bottles. If you’re celebrating on your own, consider horror themed escape room games on your phone, a tarot card reading to yourself, or go online and do some virtual tours of creepy places like the Catacombs in Paris! So just use tonight for some laughs and maybe some scares!

Day 9 – Seasonal Simmer Pot

Sometimes the simplest traditions are the most magical. A simmer pot fills your home with the scents of fall and Halloween, wrapping everything in cozy, spicy warmth. Tonight, put a pot on the stove, add water, and drop in a few seasonal classics. Items like orange slices, apple peels, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise fill the air with the perfect fragrance for the holidays. As it bubbles gently, your kitchen becomes a cauldron of comfort, the air scented with everything we love about autumn.

Day 10 – Costume Dress-Up Night

Who says you need a big party to enjoy costumes? Sometimes the most fun comes from leaning into the silliness at home. Put on your favorite costume (or throw together a quirky DIY look from your closet), snap some photos, and make it a little event just for you or your family. Or a Halloween version of Secret Santa where everyone draws a name from a hat and surprises them with a new costume that must be worn throughout the night. If it’s a more mellow or solo evening, then finding a cool Halloween makeup tutorial on YouTube is perfect way to get into the Halloween spirit.

Day 11 – At-Home Halloween Ghost Photoshoot

You don’t need a professional setup to capture spooky, scroll-stopping Halloween photos. With nothing more than a white bed sheet, a few props, and some creative lighting, you can stage your own ghostly photoshoot right at home. Go classic with the vintage “sheet ghost” look, add sunglasses for a playful twist, or snap eerie black-and-white shots by candlelight. Try poses in front of mirrors, in shadowy hallways, or outdoors at twilight for extra haunted vibes. The best part? It’s simple, hilarious, and gives you Halloween memories you’ll look back on year after year.

Day 12 – Halloween Trivia Night

At this point in the countdown, we’ve done a lot so let’s make tonight about chill competition. (If that’s even a thing lol) Who doesn’t love a trivia night!! This is a really fun activity to do solo, hanging with family, or inviting friends over. Test your smarts and see who knows the most about ghosts, witches, horror movies, and Halloween history.

How to Play

For extra fun, set a time limit for each answer or add “bonus round” lightning questions.

Create trivia questions in categories like:

  • Classic Horror Movies
  • Monsters & Myths
  • Halloween Traditions Around the World
  • Creepy Pop Culture

Keep score on a notepad or whiteboard. I’ve come up with 50 questions to get you started!

Day 13 – Halloween Feast

Now it’s time to close out our 13 days of Halloween with a full-on feast that feels both cozy and maybe a little theatrical. We’re going make it a point to cover every base from the menu to the atmosphere and just the experience as a whole. It will be a really fun way to incorporate everything we’ve learned up to now and truly make this dinner a night to remember. Light ghost candles, put a simmer pot on the stove, dress up in costume, bake some spider cookies, and make a Morticia Martini or two because now you get to treat yourself and loved ones. This feast is the perfect grand finale to a festively fun couple of weeks!

Before You Go…

Remember, there’s no “right” way to celebrate Halloween at home. You can stretch these 13 activities across the whole month to savor every autumn night or pack them into a back-to-back countdown as October 31st approaches. However you choose to enjoy them, the goal is the same: bringing the magic, mischief, and coziness of spooky season into your own space — no crowded events or stress required. Just simple, memorable moments that make Halloween feel special in your way.
