As an elder millennial, I grew up in a time when personal style and the idea of edgy makeup felt a little different. If you’re reading this, I’m going to assume you’re somewhat like me where we remember a life before there were “influencers,” and everyone using the same filters or getting the same surgical procedures. Before every trend was packaged, labeled, and tossed casually back into our doom scroll.

I’m from a time when the prettiest girl in the room obviously stood out, but there was also a space for the quirky, authentic girl. (Which. let’s be honest, the latter was by far more interesting.) And I don’t know if it was the smudged eyeliner, dark lipstick in the middle of summer, loc’d hair, tattoos, beauty marks, nose rings, or an outfit that made absolutely no sense to anyone except her that made her special. But I can say that without a doubt, the confidence that exudes from women living in their truest selves is intoxicating.

Lately . . .

I’ve noticed that a lot of beauty advice seems focused on helping women look younger, prettier, or more polished. And while there’s nothing wrong with any of those things, I think a lot of us have reached an age where we’re craving something different. Especially after becoming moms.

Here’s a shocker: We don’t necessarily want to look twenty-two again. Women in their 40s move different these days. We’re down to meet ourselves where we’re at, instead of running after the silly and often unattainable goals of the days of our youth. We strive to look like the most authentic version of ourselves no matter where we are in our lives. I don’t know about you, but I’m happy being a mom, I just still want to live in a way where I feel beautiful and I can look in a mirror and see… me.

Not the kind of edgy makeup that feels like a costume or requires an hour in front of the mirror or a suitcase full of products. I’m talking about small, intentional choices that add personality, character, and individuality to your look.

Now, I normally don’t do too much when it comes to eyeshadow. A smokey eye on a special occasion is the most I usually do. I don’t want you to think you need a rainbow palette or professional-level skills, because I’m not saying that at all. Sometimes, at the end of the day, one unexpected shade is enough.
